Discipleship: Growing in Christ

Text: As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family." Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." Luke 9:57-62

This is the price that Chirst has asked us to pay to follow Him. The cost of following Jesus. Does this challenge you? Being a disciple is tough, it is not easy.

1.) Growing is a matter of DIRECTION - v.62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Which direction are you going? You should have your eyes/attention directed on the place in which you want to go, or else you are sure to veer off the path. Proverbs 4:25-27 tells us to, Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. In Hebrews 12:2, we are encouraged to, Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Discipleship is all about direction and focus. As we fix our gaze on Christ, the more we become like Him.

2.) Growing is a matter of DEVOTION, DEDICATION, DETERMINATION, DESIRE, DILIGENCE & DISCIPLINE. Acts 2:42-47, They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Stick-to-it-tiveness. Stay on task till it is done. When will it be done, we don't know? So stick to it. 1 Timothy 4:13-16, Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Are the rows that you are plowing, the road that you are walking straight? If you were to look back at the work you have done, is everything according to His design or yours?

Easter: The Resurrection - A Story of Hope

Text: Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. John 20:1-8

There is Hope!!!
Jesus Christ is that hope. How significant an event, an empty tomb? What happens after death?

Here are a few things that happened on this day that gave us hope:

1.) The significance of the ROLLED STONE. v. 1-3 - Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. God doesn't need permission, despite Pilate's decision for death. Who needed the stone rolled away? Jesus? No, those who needed the evidence of divine power. 2 Peter 1:3 says, "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." There were far more powerful things to see behind that stone than death.

2.) The significance of the STRIPS of LINEN. vv. 5-7a He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The realization of an empty tomb fulfilled the power Jesus had over death by telling the disciples He would return from the grave. Jesus did not just come back from the dead and leave His place of death, He left what represented death where it belonged and put on robes of righteousness.

3.) The significance of the FOLDED LINEN. v.7b - The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. It was jewish custom, in that day, for a master at a meal, to fold his clothe when leaving the table. This signified that he was to return. Knowing this custom, John saw what Jesus was doing by folding His linen. He meant to return.

4.) The significance of BELIEF. v. 8 - Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. He HAS risen. You can believe. John 11:25 says, "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies...", Romans 4:25 tells us that, "He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.", and Romans 10:9 states, "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Worship: The Triumphal Entry - The Art of Praising

Text: As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away." This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.' " The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!" When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?" The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee." Matthew 21:1-11

Worship is a 168 hour a week lifestyle, not just on sunday. We see in Acts 2:43 that EVERYONE was filled with Awe, they had a spirit expecting, a spirit of anticipation, with wonder.

1.) The AWE factor - v.10-11. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?" The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee." When we come to know the One true God, our initial introduction is usually the most awesome, "Who is this man?" He has authority beyond what we can grasp. In Matthew 7:28 we see that people were amazed at the teachings of Jesus, they were AMAZED! In Matthew 8, He cleaned a man with leprosy, in chapter 9, made a lame man walk. When the crowds saw His miracles, the scripture says they were filled with awe. Everywhere Jesus went people were amazed.
Psalm 68:34 "Proclaim the power of God....Praise be to God!"

2.) The AHA factor - v.11. The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee." We recognize we have experienced the God who....reveals.....finds...and saves. The God we have felt when we have done wrong. "This is Jesus Christ." When realizing who He was, they laid down the "red" carpet. 1 Timothy 1:15-17, "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen." AHA!

3.) The ALLELUIA factor - v.9. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!" You can't heop but praise Him when you are consumed by Him. Psalm 117, "Praise the Lord, all you nations"....Psalm 150:6, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord."

Halleluia!!

Ministry: Healthy Church Ministry

Text: In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word." This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. Acts 6:1-7

Things we do for ministry, we do for God!

1.) The POTENTIAL PROBLEMS of Ministry. - v. 1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. Notice things are happening right away in this verse. There's a division (Grecian and Hebraic). They felt like they weren't getting what they want because of their mindsets and feeling a "minority". The truth is that what they were feeling wasn't directly related to their food issues. In our society there are a lot of the same mindsets. It seems effective church ministry has the same conflicts. Replace how we see ourselves and see what God sees, then that would solve our problems.

2.) The PASTOR'S POSITION in Ministry. - vv. 2-4 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word." It is the pastors role to equip us, or create opportunities, to do the service of the church. Ephisians 4:11-12, 15 says, It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

3.) The PEOPLE'S POSITION of Ministry. - vv. 5-6 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. We need someone who understands, we have a role and an experience that can minister in ways others can't. 1 Corinthians 15:58 says Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

4.) The POWER of a Pastor and People PARTNERING in Ministry. - v. 7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. Because of the delegation to handle situations that some had experience with; when people possess a ministry. Who might you influence?

Ministry: In Jesus Name

Text: So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain." Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?" God said to Moses, "I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " Exodus 3:10-14

A ministry is the servent of whatever is specified. For example, the Ministry of Defense serves our country in times that we need defense. In this passage we are reminded who we are ministers/representatives of. We have been asked to do ministry, and when God asks us to do His work, it is very specific.

1.) It is the I AM that CHOOSES (CHASES) us!-- God had Moses where He wanted him, and chased him to bring him to bring him back to Pharoah's palace. John 15:14-17 says You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other. 1 John 4:19 says We love because he first loved us. These are steps for love. God is first and last and has chosen us for salvation. He is at work around us, He has chosen us to join him in His work. You have to choose Him.

2.) It is the I AM that CHALLENGES us!-- God is in the challenging business. He challenges us beyond our own means. Look at Moses. God told him to tell them the I AM sent you. Together. Luke 14:27, And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. What a challenge to love one another. Do you see the challenges of I AM. Moses tried to back pedal, "But God...But God...", what challenge has God put before you. You have to accept the challenge. Philippians 1:6 tells us that being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. God is not going to start something in us that He won't support us to get the best outcome possible. He will see you through. What has God set you apart to do?

3.) It is the I AM that CHANGES us and others through us! -- God is always working in us as well as always working through us. In John 5:24, Jesus tells us, "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. That the changing power of God. God loves us so much, He won't let us remain the way we are.

Minisry: Every Member a Minister

Text: As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. John 9:4-6

When seeking to define ministry in the secular realm you will find that dictionaries don't fully give a true understanding of what biblical ministry stands for. Dictionary.com defines ministry as the service, function, or office of a minister of state; A governmental department presided over by a minister; something that serves as an agency, instrument, or means. To fully understand our role in ministry, we need to go to God's word.

Ministry is not just for the leadership, it's for EVERYONE! In our text we see that ministry is the calling of every christian. Jesus having said that He is the light of the world, He did work, He ministered. He precedes this with the statement that WE must do the work of Him who sent Jesus.

1.) It's time to CLOCK IN! - v. 4a says...As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent me. Like clocking in at work, as you put your card in the machine you hear...*CH-KLUNK*. This is how we get paid, this is also how our boss knows that we are there to work. When we clock in at work we usually aren't ready to do the work. We want the reward but don't want to do the work to get it. In the same way, where is your joy in ministry. Where is the compassion, the love, the desire to love. Isaiah 6:8 says, Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" We should declare to our "Boss" that we are ready to work. "I'm Jello, mold me, send me!"

2.) There will be a time to CHECK/CLOCK OUT! - v.4b says, Night is coming, when no one can work. When we clock out at the end of our work day, our spirits soar! When we clock out of this life, better things are to come in eternity. There is something to look forward to. We have limited time here, though, to take as many loved ones with us. It is called the end of the world as we know it, and the beginning of eternity. We have friends and family who aren't ready to "clock out"!

3.) There will be a PAY DAY for your ministry. - There is a reward. Our reward for our heavenly job is better than the reward we receive here on earth for our job. Despite whether we do our heavenly job on earth or not, there will be a pay check. A pay check in words. 1 Corinthians 3:8-9 states that The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. There will be only 2 phrases that we may receive. The first being, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" The second being, "Depart from me/Away from me, I never knew you!"

It is time to get to work! What kind of paycheck will you be receiving?

Ministry: The Art of Giving

Text-One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. Acts 3:1-8

Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and JUMPING, and praising God.

What Peter had to give wasn't of earthly value, but of heavenly value. Acts 2:45 talks about how the disciples sold all their possessions and gave to anyone that had a need. Peter saw a need, and gave to this man what HE was worth. Give to people what they need so others can give greater attention to God.

1.) Give (v.6) - ...what I have I give to you. When you are uncomfortable in spirit, you become stretched. What do we have to give...awesome and life changing power of the Holy Spirit. Little is much when God is in it. We have power. There is something you can do to make others lives better.

2.) Give! - Matthew 25:34-40 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' Gave.....Gave.....Gave....Give as if you are giving what you've got to God. What do you give to? The least of these. What do you give to God? You give what you have.

3.) Give!! - Keep giving...sometimes till it hurts. Pastor Dan tells of a story from his childhood in which an older woman from the church felt like she had nothing to give to the church or its people become she was of little means. One day when finding out that Dan collected rubber bands, she became Dan's #1 supplier for the elastic-fun-machines. She found that her giving had purpose, despite how small of a gift it was. There is something special about giving the most insignificant, smallest gift. It brought joy to one.....the One!

Little is much when God is in it!!!

Fellowship: When your fellow isn't shipshape

Text: "If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. Matthew 18:15-17

When Jesus was approaching the time of His death, He spoke to His disciples about matters that were closest to His heart. He knew He was about to die. When it comes to matters that involve discord and conflict, we should learn from the examples that Christ himself gave, and apply them to our everyday lives. For we don't know the time in which we leave these earthly bodies.

1.) A personal CONVERSATION. (V.15) Search your own hearts before approaching the matter or theirs (Matthew 7:3). Just between the two of you. We typically talk to a third party (Gossip), we cover it up with the "concern" that we have for them. Then we end it with, "we really should pray for them." We should have genuine concern for them, giving them the opportunity of reconciliation through the means of grace and personal affection. The idea is to provide a means for growth and restitution. Just you and them.

2.) A Prayerful COUNCIL. (v. 16) But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. After examining your own heart and have approached them personally, the next step is to address the person with a bit more pressure by bringing in a neutral third party. This is, again to bring reconciliation, not astrangment. You are showing that you are serious in bringing a conclusion to this situation and finding forgiveness.

3.) Compassionate CHURCH involvement. (v. 17a) If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church... This avenue is taken when common ground cannot be found. If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church! I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? But instead, one brother goes to law against another—and this in front of unbelievers! The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers. 1 Corinthians 6:1-8

Come together in conflict, God will come and be in our midst.
Matthew 18:20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.

Fellowship: The Means to Encouragement and Endurance

Text: We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: "The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me." For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. Romans 15:1-7

When two or three or more are gathered in fellowship, there is nothing like it! Fellowship gives us the ability to encourage each other in ways that will make more stable in our faith.

Fellowship gives us the ability to:

1.) ...Encourage each other to remain SOFT but SURE - Be moldable. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. Heb. 3:13-14 Don't loose the essence of who you are in Christ through whom you are moldable. The bible's use of clay is to mold and shape and still be clay. Clay is just clay, moldable until hardened. In today's time, it would be easier to use Jello as our modern day example. Jello is moldable until you cool it, then it hardens, but the great thing about something thats hardened. It can be made moldable again.

2.) ...Encourage each other to remain STEADY - Faithful! Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Heb. 10:19-25 Let us.....Let us hold unswervingly to the One who has called us. How do we weather the storm? Let's use the example of the Sequoia trees. They survive not by themselves, but by growing their roots together with the entire forest to give substance to all, together. They stay strong due to the group of roots. Grounded!

3.) ...Encourage each other to become/remain STRONGER - What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. 1 Cor. 14:26 Strengthening of the church. Fellowship is not just to gain "buddies", or just to chill out. It is to strengthen one another and in turn the church, to steady each other. What power can be derived when God's people come together in His name to find weakness and provide Light with strength.

Never become satisfied. Don't become hardened. You can become soft if reheated. Encourage each other, be Jello in the hands of God.

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12

Fellowship: The art of one anothering

Text: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35

Together.....They devoted themselves......They gave to everyone who had need.....THEY....IT'S ABOUT WE!!!

1.) Love one another - It is the Hallmark of Faith, our greatest commandment. John writes that this is our new command to love one another. Love is the act of will, without showing love, it is hard to experience emotional love. Love is: Hair-do's that "look worse", cookies that "Hardly taste burnt", or just cuddling up next to the one you love so they can warm up their feet. John 15:17 "This is my command: Love each other."

2.) Forgiving one another - Ephesians 4:32 says, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Scripture is black and white. Cory Ten Boom puts it like this, forgiveness is like pulling a toll bell rope. When we hold the rope, we continue to pull the bell and make it toll. Just as you hold the rope, you are holding on to the offense that wronged you. Until we let go of the rope, it will ring for a bit, but won't ring forever. Just let go! Let the ringing end--let the healing begin.

3.) Live in Peace with one another - 1 Thesselonians 5:13 says, "Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other." Little squables create the most devicive arguments. Compromise in order to keep the peace. Live at peace with one another. Psalm 34:11-14 – “Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.”

4.) Serve one another - 1 Peter 4:9-10 says, "Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." Serve one another with the gifts that we've been given. Christian service means this: Living out a slave relationship to our saviour, loyalty to the king. Want to show someone you love, forgive and live in peace? Serve them.

John 3:16 tells of God's love for us. What if we were to use that to express how we love other. It would go something like this.

"For _____________ so love others, their family, and the church, he/she gave their ___________, that whoever believes in God the Father, did not perish, but found everlasting life."

Fellowship; with God and Man

Among the 5 basic purposes of the church – Evangelism, Ministry, Worship, Discipleship, and Fellowship, Fellowship is the one that I favor. It is one of the purposes that can be fulfilled while doing evangelism, while ministering to the community, while worshipping and while discipling new believers. Fellowship is what brings the body together.

The Greek word for fellowship is koinonia, – “communion". Acts 2:42-47a – They (the early church – the 3000 that were added to the number of believers on the day of Pentecost) devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” These people knew how to fellowship and it was far more that just eating meals together. The scripture said they had all things in common.

So what does it take to have this kind of communion? What does it mean to have all things in common?

1.) Fellowship with God is the Foundation. For friendship to turn to fellowship we have to start at the foundation of all fellowship and that is with a relationship with Jesus Christ. For our church to experience true fellowship we are first called to fellowship with Jesus Christ. I John 1:1-4 – “This which was from the beginning, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.”

2.) Fellowship with Man Flows out from Fellowship with God. Once we have fellowship with God, our relationship with Him is growing and we are walking with Him daily, then out from that relationship should come a natural expression of love for His creation – all of mankind and the church. I John 1:5-7 – “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies is from all sin.” --How fellowship is expressed: Read Romans 12:9-21--

In closing, remember, first of all that God prayed that we would experience fellowship. The words of Jesus found in the book of John are in your bulletin today. Jesus prayed that we would be one. That we would be one with God and that we would be one with each other – united so the world would know why Jesus was sent: Because he loves them.

Without fellowship with God there can be no fruit – John 15:4 – “No branch can bear fruit by itself. It must remain in the vine.”

Evangelism: Receive, Believe, Be Born of God

The last message in another great series! I hope you are seeing that our main purpose as a church and as individuals is vital to all of life. The impact we make in this world for Christ, influences EVERY fiber of our lives for now and for all eternity.

Text: There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. John 1:6-13
1.) Live your life with a Purpose!
Check out verses 6-7. “There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.” John was sent by God with a purpose, and that purpose was to be a witness. John had a calling on his days, and had a stirring in his heart. John not only lived with passion, but with purpose: To point people to Jesus.
We all have a God given purpose and we need to constantly endevour to live it out.
2.) Knowing your Position!
Not only did John live life with a purpose, but he also knew his position. “He himself was not the light, he came only as a witness to the light.” (POSITION) John understood his position – He was not the light, but was a witness to the light. Our message is Jesus.
John submitted his will to Gods. He submitted his person to Gods. He submitted his spirit to God’s. John wanted God to be seen in all His glory. And so he submitted any power or position he may have been able to attain to point people to Jesus.
Dictionary.com difines submission as, "the act of submitting; usually surrendering power to another." Surrendering is a key word. Surrendering takes into account that you have a God-given right to do whatever you want, but you decline that right in order that the other party’s rights come before yours.
3.) Revealing the Path!
Once we are living with a purpose and we know our position, the rest is actually the easy part. The icing on the evangelistic cake is revealing the PATH. The path to salvation is spelled out in verse 12 – “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”
So what does it mean to Receive Christ? The Bible tells us that the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, but that gift must be received.
This is our message and we must share it. We must keep first things first. We need to take this message across the room. We must remember to share our stories of grace. We must let them know that they can be born of God by receiving and believing the One who came to die for their sins and show us the way to live.

God's Grace is our Gospel Text

Scripture text: Acts 5:17-42 (esp. v. 42) "Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ."

Dictionary.com defines gospel as the teachings of Jesus and the apostles; the Christian revelation; the story of Christ's life and teachings, esp. as contained in the first four books of the New Testament, namely Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Pastor Dan gave the challenge that all of us have the ability and the means to share the gospel, we need just to find what expression best fits us.

1.) You can share the Gospel with you LIFE! (non-verbal)
*People are constantly watching us and looking for proof of Christ in our lives. Continually we are the light of the world for the kingdom. (Matt. 5:14) We see in scripture, many examples of people living life according to God's will, and making a huge impact on history. Look first at Abraham and Isaac. Abraham had every intention to go to the top of the mountain and sacrifice his son on the Lords behalf. Isaac following his fathers instruction and was prepared to lay down his life in obedience. Abraham's obedience to his Father made him favorable in God's eyes and he was made the father of an innumerable nation. (Gen. 23) Next we see Daniel, who King Darius threw into a lions den, had faith that God would save him, praised God in his time of danger and the lions mouths were made shut.(Dan. 6)
Gods hands are working in lives. What story is God telling in your life to the world? What story does your life tell?

2.) You can share the Gospel with your LIPS! (verbally)
*Romans 1:16 says, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes...". Your spoken testimony will change lives, the righteousness from God will be revealed. No one has lived an entirely honorable life, Romans 3:23 tells us that we have all fallen short of the glory of God. But directly after this verse, we find redemption through grace. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." People want to know they can be made right.

3.) You can share the Gospel with LEAD! (if necessary, write it down)
*Draw it out, practice it, put scripture in it if possible, and then execute.

People are visually attracted. Build a bridge to do whatever it takes to reach them.
"A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken." Psalm 34:19 - 20

Fred Johnson experienced a miracle! He is doing well, with minor injuries. The doctors expect him to be released in a matter of a day or two. I know he appreciates your prayers.

Evangelism: Just walk across the Room

Text: "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stnad, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

In this sermon we were challenged to Live Life 3 Dimensionally or "3D". Here are the 3 "D"'s from Pastor Dan's Sermon.

1. Develope Friendships. We might be sent to befriend those who don't know Jesus, those with no hope; to be the one the Holy Spirit uses to reach and save the lost. We need to shine on their lives like a city on a hill. We need sometimes, to walk across the room, establish personal relationships; to share our stories. Be intentional.

2. Discovering stories. Share where you've been, how God got ahold of you, and share what God is doing in your life, and around you. People don't want to know how much you know until the know how much you care. 1 Corinthians 9:22-23 says that in order to reach people, we have to become all things to all men that we might save some. We need to relate with people. Seek what others have to say and listen. Don't be anything you're not, be yourself.

3. Discern next steps. What are you going to do with this info you have sought out. Do not ignore opportunities set forth by the Lord. He will lead you to people that need what you have to offer. He will also stretch you to equip you with what you need to reach the lost. What you have to offer feeds their needs, not their wants. Be a resource for God to channel through.

Do whatever it takes. Will you be the one!?!
